How does Mediation Differ from Counselling
Mediation is specifically focused on communication and conflict resolution. It is a space for you to have a structured conversation with the support and skill of a neutral mediator.
Mediation is a more structured, business like process than therapy, and is focused on a specific issue/s.
Mediation is usually short term, with 1-5 sessions needed, where as Therapy is usually longer term.
Mediation is not focused on the psychology of the relationship or not diagnosing and doesn’t go into great detail about the past. It is focused more on the present and what needs to happen to move forward together with the specific issues.
There may be 2 mediators co-mediating in a session.
Mediation acknowledges but is not focused on emotions. It is focused on getting a deeper understanding of the issues and how they impact all involved and recognising the deeper needs and values. There is some level of self emotional regulation required to be in mediation.
Mediation is solution focused – you will come away with the next steps or your agreements clearly defined.
Many that go through mediation improve their communication and conflict resolution skills long term.
Therapy is often recommended while preparing for mediation for individualised emotional support.
